The return of buffitude

The other day, a friend and I were having some drinks (Little Boomey Cab Sav, if you really need to know) when we bumped into an old colleague of ours. OK, he's not old but we worked together 12 years ago. My gawd, he is twice the size he was back then! Sigh, I used to have such a crush too. He's happily married now and is apparently making the big bucks so I guess that counts for a lot.

Anyway, this got me thinking (again) "why do so many guys let themselves go post marriage??" I find that as we age, the guys who were athletic and buffy get all soft and round and the ones who were soft and round get trim and fit, the ones who were skinny wimps get all buff too!

Coincidentally, I read an article about body image in gay and straight men which got me thinking even more. The article claims "The study found that heterosexual and gay men ... were equally likely to have unrealistic body images – meaning they want bodies that are difficult or impossible to achieve – or to have a distorted body image, in which they misperceived their actual shape. " So in other words, the body ideal is sought after equally in gay as well as straight guys? When I look around the gym, I guess it's true to some degree. I would say that 75% of all the guys at my gym are doable (and definitely straight) but I have yet to figure out who the homos are. The buffest of the buff wear the most revealing shirts. Exactly, who are they trying to impress? They certainly arent talking to the women there. Now don't get the wrong idea, I am not at the gym spending all my time cruising instead of working out but I have to admit the eye candy is pretty darn good.

Another observation, guys of similar buffness (buffitude ???) stick together.

A friend said to me, "i'm amazed that you get any work done with all that eye candy??"
My response was, "simple. I use them as incentive and try to keep up with them or do whatever they are doing... 'i want that doods arms, that other doods shoulders, that one's abs, the other one's chest ... etc. etc.' " Honestly, with so many people glancing at you, you pay attention to what you are doing so as to not look like a fool!
